Navapur Railway Station: India's Unique Border Station Where One Platform Spans Gujarat and Maharashtra

Navapur Railway Station is one of India's most unique railway stations, with its 800-meter platform divided between Gujarat and Maharashtra by a state border. A bench, ticket counter, Station Master's office and other facilities fall under different jurisdictions, making the station a remarkable example of history, geography and administration converging at one location.

India is home to countless remarkable railway stations, but Navapur Railway Station stands apart for an extraordinary reason. Passengers waiting on its platform can literally sit in two different states at the same time. Located on the border between Gujarat and Maharashtra, the station is divided by a bright white line running across Platform 1, making it one of the country's most unusual railway stations.

At first glance, Navapur Railway Station appears to be an ordinary regional stop on the Western Railway network. However, its remarkable geographical location becomes evident as soon as passengers step onto Platform 1. A bench positioned directly over the state border is painted in two different colors, with the green half located in Maharashtra and the orange half in Gujarat. This unique arrangement allows travelers to rest their left arm in one state and their right arm in another while sitting on the same bench.

The station's administrative arrangement is equally unusual. The Station Master's office, the Railway Police booth and the catering stalls fall under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra, while the ticket booking counter is situated entirely within Gujarat. To ensure seamless communication for passengers from both states, all public train announcements are made in four languages: Hindi, English, Gujarati and Marathi.

The unusual division of Navapur Railway Station is not the result of a modern engineering decision but a consequence of historical and political developments. During British rule, when the Udhna-Jalgaon railway line was constructed, the entire region formed part of the unified Bombay Presidency. At that time, Navapur functioned as a rural railway station serving the surrounding tribal communities and local trade routes.

The situation changed on May 1, 1960, when the erstwhile Bombay State was divided along linguistic lines to form the separate states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. During the official demarcation process, surveyors drew the state boundary directly through the town of Navapur, with the border passing through the middle of the railway station's infrastructure. Instead of relocating the station or modifying the land boundaries, the authorities retained the existing alignment, leaving the 800-meter-long platform divided between the two states.

Today, Navapur Railway Station remains one of India's most geographically distinctive railway stations, where history, administration and geography intersect on a single platform. Its split jurisdiction and border-straddling infrastructure continue to make it an extraordinary landmark, offering passengers the rare experience of being in Gujarat and Maharashtra at the same moment while highlighting the lasting impact of the 1960 state reorganization.
